In the Spring of 1817, Alcy Callen and her father visit a step-uncle they have long presumed dead; but instead of enjoying a loving reunion, they are plunged into treachery and deceit. Nothing is as they expected and little is what it seems. Even the man who helps her escape is not the reliable suitor he appears.

Alcy is caught between gratitude and fear, unable to avoid her rescuer's attentions or understand the responses they stir. Neither can she tell what sort of man he is or what he intends to do with her in the strange place they are going. Will he keep her for himself or will he sell her to the highest bidder?

Of one person only is she certain, but will he come for her before it is too late?

From the Author:
A River Too Deep is the first of three chronologically ordered stand-alone novels in my People of the Book series. Parts of this story had been rolling around in my head for years, so the bulk of its first draft took only three intensive weeks to write. One small decision made by this first book's protagonist starts a ball rolling that changes many lives--including her own--throughout the next three decades. I hope it will inspire readers to see their own lives--and the sovereignty of God--a little differently.
From the Inside Flap:
I was swept away into a wonderful story, pleasantly transported into a story old in time, but so fresh and new. Alcy Callen has no idea that her life will not turn out like she planned. And when one horrible event occurs and she is convinced it could become no worse, her circumstance change so drastically, she is sure it is the end for her. And in a sense, she's right. It is the end for Alcy Callen. But it is also the beginning of so much more. Reading this book reminded me of why it is I love to read, and why reading on your lunch hour is not the smartest thing, at least for me. As my hour came to a close, I dreaded the closing of the book. For while I knew that the characters would be waiting patiently for me when I opened it again, my mind simply did not want to return to the year 2008 or the work that awaited me at my desk. I'd like to personally thank Ms. Betts for this wonderfully delightful journey. It did indeed bless my heart.
