CONTENT ADVISORY: This is an realistic Young Adult book. It may also fit the new category of New Adult, but that definition seems to be in flux. It has profanity, a number of scenes of violence, sexuality and adult situations. It was written for a target audience of young adults who generally don't read and find it hard to find a female protagonist they can identify with and appreciate.

For 17 years I have worked with students who were dealt a challenging hand, often felt that they didn't have a voice, and had trouble finding themselves in the world. Too often the young adult books are light and fun. And the protagonists are often Caucasian and male. Though this is changing, there are not enough strong females central characters who actually effect the world around themselves. I had created this universe in a story about 15 years ago, but instead of a virus, it was a bacteria. When I came up with placing Lizzie in this universe, everything clicked.
I didn't want to write another zombie, nuclear war, global warming, alien invasion, natural disaster apocalypse novel. I wanted to create a realistic world that would make readers think about valuing our relationships.
