*50 years ago thousands of nests were counted each year in the state of Terengganu Peninsula (Malaysia) In 1991 the number was down to 207 and further reduced to a mere 19 in 1998. In recent years the numbers have dropped to less than 10 nests per year and the population is considered virtually extinct.

*WAYS TO HELP TURTLES!*

You can make a difference! Please help us save the sea turtles from extinction. Together we can make it. There are many ways to help.

What you can do:
*Tell your friends about the Turtle Foundation.
*Avoid restaurants with turtle soup, turtle eggs or turtle meat on the menu. *Report the relevant restaurants to the Turtle Foundation.
*Do not buy any products made from turtles such as tortoiseshell or similar souvenirs.
*Do not disturb nesting turtles by your presence, noise or lights.
*Avoid hotels that have destroyed beaches which have been used by the turtles for nesting.
*Divers: Don“t touch - riding turtles is no fun.
*Never toss cigarette butts or plastic bags into the sea. Turtles mistake plastic bags for jellyfish (the favorite dish of some species); cigarette butts swell in the stomach.
*Keep yourself informed and stay up-to-date for example by visiting the various internet pages about turtles.

One night in 2001, about a month after I brought baby Madeline home from the hospital, I noticed something quite strange on the beach in front of our south Florida home. It was late and Momwas tired, doing a last-one-of-the-day bottle feeding on the deck after a long day of new mom activities. As Maddie slurped down the final ounceof her formula with that familiar glup, glup, glup sound, I noticed dark, tiny shapes scurrying across the sand. What was this? I wondered and went down for a closer look. There they were! Baby turtles streaming out of hundreds of small nests, gentle rises in the sand were their markers. The babies made fanciful patterns in the sand as they dashed on littlegreen legs in a remarkable race to the sea. I watched them hop, one byone, into welcoming waves that sparkled under the beautiful moonlight. "I'm coming Mama..." they seemed to be saying, and I realized that I was witnessing one of nature's sacred events, the love bond between mother and child. It is this precious feeling that inspired me to write I'll Follow the Moon, that came into being a few years later.
