American Militarism is based on the Henry L. Stimson lectures William R. Polk gave at Yale University. The book aims to provide the “other side of the coin” to his Crusade and Jihad: The Thousand Year War Between the Muslim World and the Global North. In the first part, Mr. Polk focuses on the ways in which our early experience shaped complex mix of altruism and violence that marks the American character; he then turns, in the second part, to the codification of American aspirations and fears in the writing of the Constitution. Drawing on their words he brings out the Founding Fathers’ dread of militarism and shows what they did to try to protect the fragile republic they designed. In the third part, he shows how the America of today has evolved into “a warring people” and lays out paths to recover the system designed by the Founding Fathers to “secure the Blessing of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity.”
