Three generations of a Latino family sit on the porch at sunset and share a watermelon and memories. The grandchildren listen with adoration as the grandparents tell their how-we-met story. Reader Kristine Klanderud reads both English and Spanish text so that children can hear the pronunciation of both Spanish and English. The recording offers tracks with and without page turn signals so that children can follow at their reading level.

Review:
Gr 2-4 For one Hispanic family, Sunday get-togethers have become a tradition that bonds three generations. One afternoon, the icy watermelon that Mom serves makes Grandfather reminisce about his days picking and selling melons with his own father. To the children s surprise, if it weren t for watermelons, abuelo wouldn t have met their abuela. This tale of simple joys and family ties is now also available on a bilingual audio CD. The story is read as it appears in the book, with the Spanish translation immediately following the English version. The crisp pronunciation and animated tone make up for the quirky adult voices and a CD that could use some technical polish (for example, a music cue serves as a page-turn indicator on tracks one and two but not on track three). Children in second language instruction programs would benefit from a separate reading of the entire story in each language, but this option is not available in this edition. Recommended for school and community libraries. --Criticas Magazine, 7/15/08
