About the Author:

Born in Alice Springs, Australia, in 1937, to lay-workers at Hermannsburg Lutheran mission, Phil grew up with aborigines, eating snakes and grubs. Early tuition was by correspondence. Church boarding school, 1000 miles away by steam train, followed. While completing a 7 year Auto/Diesel Apprenticeship in the city, he learned to fly in open cockpit Tiger Moths. Weekends, he worked on Mustangs in the Reserve Air Force. Following a traumatic relationship with a Catholic girl while working at a uranium mine, he began maintaining and flying aeroplanes in Australia’s outback, becoming licensed to fly and fix both. In 1961, he saw a helicopter and was hooked. By 1966 he was qualified to fly and service them. Phil subsequently flew and managed helicopter crews of many different nationalities worldwide including operating the world’s biggest chopper. His inspirational, frank, apolitical account of politics, marriage, intrigue, corruption, divorce and global loves is a gripping true story.
