Pursing the adventures of Willie Graves, a seven-year-old mulatto boy who is accused of murdering his father, the novel sweeps across Virginia--from his mother's bordello in Charlottesville to the majestic Chesapeake Bay to the Great Dismal Swamp to Jefferson's rotunda at the University of Virginia. In the course of his travels, the boy is introduced to the life of train-hoppers, crabbers, farm workers, juke joints, murderers, thieves, policemen, and prostitutes. Ultimately the novel adds up to a gripping human story of redemption and love.

About the Author:
Peter Skinner is the author of WHITE BUFFALO, published earlier by Birch Brook Press. He is the father of three children and a stepson. He and his wife live in Virginia.
Review:
This is an exciting and generous novel. It was a pleasure to see, hear, and feel the array of characters, some of them up to no good, and some doing the right thing against heavy odds... --John D. Casey, author of SPARTINA

Mr. Skinner seems a novelist in the Steinbeck tradition, marrying history, nature, social issues, vivid characters, and enough troubles and hi-jinks to keep the pages turning at a steady pace. The setting is post-World War II Charlottesville, Virginia and the tidewater region. Fate brings together a young mulatto boy and an aging white drifter at the possible end of his tether. Both seek redemption, peace, hope, and some sort of future. The writer is in total control of his material--and his obvious affection for all of creation is contagious. Inspiring and heartwarming--but first and foremost, a damn good read. --Phil Wagner, THE ICONOCLAST

'The Bells of Moses Henry' not only tells a mesmerizing story, but has a cast of disparate characters whose lives blend together in a deceptively simple way...Peter Skinner has the gift--as do all good writers--of creating sentences that linger long after they've been read...Am I high on 'The Bells of Moses Henry?' Yes. -- --Barbara Rich, THE DAILY PROGRESS
