AUTHOR COMMENTS - As my oldest daughter approached driving age, I went to bookstores looking for a simple book that would explain the basics of car operation for her. I hoped to find something simple and non-intimidating that she could read in about an hour. I did not find it. So, I put together an outline and some sketches from which to teach her. That outline became the very rough first draft of "Car Care Basics". Those basics served both daughters well. They made it through college, without Dad nearby, and did not harm their cars. In fact, they both take very good care of their cars. INTRODUCTION TO "CAR CARE BASICS" - Cars are almost a necessity in most of the U.S. today. They give us the freedom to travel on our own schedule, directly to the location we choose. Cars are wonderful machines that are very complex but also very reliable if we take care of them. It makes sense to take care of your car so that it will last many years and so that it will not leave you stranded on the roadside. This simple book was written to help the average person understand the basics of automobile systems and operation. This knowledge will help you understand why the monitoring and service of your car are important. It will also help you to better understand and make decisions about repairs when they are needed. The figures are as simple as we could make them while still providing a good basic understanding of car operations. The text is double spaced so that you can make notes, underline, and highlight easily. Although the word "car" is used throughout this book, the chapters apply to sport utility vehicles and light trucks as well.
