This book is a firsthand account of Johnson's attempt to make a difference: the roadblocks he encountered, the personal attacks he endured, the truth about how your government operates and how professional management tools can help. The book demonstrates, time and again, how the lack of good management adversely affects policy implementation across the spectrum, from national defense to welfare.

About the Author:
Roger W. Johnson’s unique resume – CEO of a Fortune 500 company, leadership roles in educational institutions and not-for-profits, and heading up a major federal agency – gives his observations particular credibility. The first Republican appointed to a top post in the Clinton Administration, he became head of the GSA (General Services Administration) in 1993, directing the organization that provides the buildings, services, technology and workplace essentials needed by other federal agencies. President Clinton also appointed him to assist Vice President Al Gore in the development and implementation of the Reinventing Government initiatives.

Since leaving Washington, Johnson has served on the boards of several Fortune 500 companies. He also teaches graduate-level courses at the University of California-Irvine and Claremont Graduate University. In 1998 he and his wife created the Roger W. and Janice M. Johnson Endowed Chair in Civic Governance and the Social Ecology of Public Management at the University of California-Irvine.

He has been acclaimed for his personal and professional accomplishments as well as his involvement in arts and philanthropic organizations. Roger and Janice Johnson currently reside in Orange County, California.
