Although the title would seem directed only at the people who live in New Mexico, this is in fact a usually funny and sometimes poetic evocation of the landscape and people of almost anywhere in the Southwest. It begins with a witty rewrite of the creation myth, then goes back a century and a half to a touching baptism at one of New Mexico's most sacred spiritual shrines. Then back to the presence with "The Menu of the Hands," a hilarious spoof on wily waiters taking advantage of the naiveté of summertime visitors. Never, anywhere, has a meal ever been served with this much elán and chutzpah. Finally there is a beautiful evocation of the near-mystical effects the Southwest landscape can have on locals and visitors alike. Behind those magnificent mesas and mountains, the stones have a voice you can hear--if you listen the right way.

About the Author:
Mr. Bullis was drawn to live in New Mexico by the very things he writes about in this poem: How did this mysterious, complex geology ever come to look like this? Will the Rio Grande Rift Zone being spread apart by continental drift ever again bring the volcanic fury that made a certain portiion of the stones to be seen everywhere? What secrets are kept by the rural Hispanics and their deep devotion to traditional Catholicism; does what they do hint at what they really think, or will their inscrutable terseness always keep outsiders from knowing the full set of facts? Are some of those summertime waiters having a bit of fun at the visiting tourists who haven't a clue what all those dishes are on a local restaurant's menu? And finally, what binds this state's identity to its residents more powerfully than any other force: the land itself, or the people who have lived on it from time immemorial?
