A Mom of Many Hats helps children affected by a parent battling cancer and undergoing chemotherapy with a healing literary experience. The combined storybook/chapter-style book is written for children of varied ages. Each child can experience the story in an age appropriate manner. Each family can then use this book as a tool to discuss the cancer journey. Cancer treatments take time. The book s content and length are intended to assist the family during this time. The story take place during summer, and Olivia and Brad find out that their energetic mom has cancer. Their carefree lives are turned upside down. They feel helpless and scared, among other emotions. As predicted, mom s hair falls out during chemotherapy. Seeing their mom down, Olivia comes up with a brilliant idea that takes on a life of its own. She and Brad, with the help of Grandma and Dad, plan a surprise for their mom: they throw her the happiest hat shower ever! Each guest brings a hat that hands their mom a virtue (for example, the-fireman s fire hat delivers courage), which she and her family will need to get through chemotherapy and beyond. The experience is positive and powerful for everyone. By the end of the story, Olivia and Brad have learned a life lesson or two . . .

Review:
The creative approach of A Mom of Many Hats fills a need in the field of Oncology for our patients and their families. It is refreshing to find a children s book that helps parents and children talk about their feelings and find tangible opportunities to support one another. This book is exceptionally well crafted, insightful and motivational. I highly recommend it for families who want help with the challenge of communicating about the realities of cancer therapy/cancer diagnosis with their children. --Hetty Caraway, M.D., MBA Assistant Professor, The Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center, Johns Hopkins Hospital

A Mom of Many Hats helps move a family s focus from the clinical needs of a parent with cancer to the emotional needs of the parent s school-aged children. This sensitively written and illustrated book provides tools for parents to help older children cope: it works through the stages of loss that a child may experience and enables family members to talk openly about the parent s cancer. A Mom of Many Hats should be a great aid to families with school-aged children to help them cope with the cancer journey. Primary school children will likely need gentle guidance with the text and interpretation of the concepts. --Gerald M. Loughlin, M.D., Nancy C. Paduano Professor and Chairman, Weill Cornell Medical College; Pediatrician in-Chief, Phyllis and David Komansky Center for Children s Health, New York Presbyterian Hospital

This book provides a positive and sensitive tool for oncology nurse navigators to give our patients; a book that can be shared with their children at a time when words are hard to find and even more difficult to say. A Mom of Many Hats is the one children s book that addresses the elephant in the room and opens the dialogue needed to close the gap when cancer interrupts one's life. We look forward to distributing this heartwarming book nationwide. --Sharon Francz, President and Co-Founder, National Coalition For Oncology Nurse Navigators (NCONN)
