Robert X. Leeds gathered these ballads over a fifty year period during his travels around the globe. In ships' engine rooms, in various branches of the military, around camp fires in remote African jungles, in detention barracks and in one of the worst African prisons, he gathered many of the poems included among the 195 story-poems in this anthology.
