Cat Book started out simply enough. Emily Weinstein set out to do a series of monoprints of cats she is personally acquainted with. Exploring the subject, she soon learned that every cat has a story, and one story led to another. As the stories became more fantastic, Weinstein traveled to places like West Virginia to meet Regis, the talking cat, and to Brooklyn's world renowned Scarlet, who rescued her five kittens from a fire.

At age three I drew my first cat, Misty. He was a long-haired blue-cream who seized my heart and started me on the path that led to this book. I know first hand how extremely important it is for children to be raised with animals that are treated with love and respect.

Following my rendition of the moon in Moon Book, it was time to focus on my other passion, cats. Unpredictable as cats themselves, monoprints were the perfect choice, and I began doing the first cats. With monoprints, the artist works on a piece of glass rather than a canvas, and then transfers the image to paper with a rubbing technique. The image is squooshed. You're not getting refined detail, but you're getting a kind of spontaneous surprise. It has a lot of life of its own because the paint does its own thing. Like cats!
