Poetry for a Midsummer's Night by internationally renowned poet Marvin Bell is a handsome hard cover volume of poetry written in the spirit of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. The poems, with a contemporary twist of words only Bell could craft, reflect the mix of courtly lovers, enchanted forest, magical transformations and humor that makes the play one of the most beloved of Shakespeare's works. Eight four-color paintings of midsummer night skies accompany the poems, not as illustrations but as visual poetry on the same theme. The oil paintings by noted artist Mary Powell, commissioned specifically for this volume, set the stage for a magical night in the forest, an evening with friends, or a moment with a lover.

From the Publisher:
We believe that at least once in your life, you should read poetry under a midsummer night sky. This is a glass-of-wine conversation with Marvin Bell about one of the most beautiful and beloved plays in the English language.
From the Author:
Inasmuch as Shakespeare's play gives us all the narrative we can handle, replete with adventure and spectacle, I thought to accompany it with a rational music. These poems are a kind of talk that might go on among those who know the play. We do not take Shakespeare's place. We make a place for Shakespeare. That is, these poems are not the play, but are a play upon the play. I pray the reader will find them easy to enter and, through them, enter the theatre, where the shades of Oberon and Titania, Hermia and Lysander, Demetrius and Helena, and of the trickster Puck, glimmer in the recesses of our imagination, as we relive the longest day, and quickest night, of the year.
