"Wake Up and Smell the Dollars! Whose Inner City Is This Anyway!" was written by Dorothy Pitman Hughes, the first African-American woman to own an office supply store and to become a member of the 89 year old Stationers Association of New York (SANY). She has been a guest lecturer at Columbia University, taught a course called "The Dynamics of Change" at the College of New Rochelle, and she is a guest lecturer at City College in Manhattan. In 1997, Ms. Hughes, as CEO of Harlem Office Supply, Inc., made history when she began to offer HOS stock at $1.00 a share to individuals, corporations, partnerships and non-profit organizations. Hughes was particularly interested in ownership by African-American children so that they can build economically for the future.. She is also a member of several organizations that give support, particularly to the economic and social development of the inner cities in the country.

Dorothy Hughes stated "I have written this book to show that economic empowerment is achievable for our people and that, no matter how long it takes and what degree of hardship the struggle for it entails, it must be achieved. It is my hope that sharing my story and insights with you will quicken and ease the process for all of us."

We were told that it was a new day, that Harlem would be different now and if we weren't ready to compete, we should get out.
