The Great Golf Collections of the World includes 24 sections that display collectibles amassed by individuals. While some are broad-based and others are thematic or specialized, they all possess one common theme--only the very best. Virtually all the collections have been cultivated and enhanced over several decades--no amateurs here! Among the collections is the largest private golf book library in the world—over 22,000 volumes, the lifetime accumulation of golf's most renowned professional, who bears the title of a nobleman, and a superb collection of golf-themed art that is a museum in itself. There are also fascinating collections built by enthusiasts that are experts in singular niches like ceramics, paper ephemera, autographed photos of early champions, ancient golf clubs, and century old golf marketing materials-- to name just a few.Nine private clubs with extensive historic holdings are profiled. Stretching from Australia to North America to Europe these clubs have embraced the preservation of their own specialized place in the annals of golf history, while also expanding their collections to develop a more expansive history of the sport in general. Three world renowned golf museums have opened their doors through this volume to encourage golfers to learn more about the history of the ancient game.In addition to historical revelations, the book also features 13 different topical sections including historical narratives on clubs, balls and tees, a survey that traces a millennium of golf history and its predecessor games, and topical sections on individual items like golf postcards, travel brochures and animation art, all profusely illustrated with explanatory captions and a complete index

From the Inside Flap:
Great Players Love Great Collections! This is a true treasure trove of rare and visually captivating golf collectibles, many of which are housed in private collections and rarely seen by the public, and others that are part of the rich heritage of private golf club and museum collections. Explore golf 's visual history through stunning early paintings, turn-of-the-century postcards, vintage posters, decorative ceramics, signed photographs of the game's legendary champions, and much more. I loved it, especially the chance to revisit the Royal Sydney and Royal Melbourne Golf Club collections! Ian Baker Finch I enjoyed the spectacular photography and informative historical background provided along with each of the images. Anyone interested on the history of golf or a fan of the game will find this a compelling read. Even the most sophisticated golfers will learn new information, while the images and design will entertain the novice. The book layout is such that a casual reader can pick it up, chose an interesting subject, enjoyably peruse it and then move on. This book is entertaining, delightful, and informative -- I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.Mark Wiebe
About the Author:
Dick McDonough is a graduate of Villanova University and Michigan Law School. He enjoyed a lengthy and fulfilling career with IBM. During his college years he was an NCAA champion and held several world records in swimming. While his athletic prowess did not extend to golf, he has an insatiable love of the game and its history.Travel and relocations during his IBM career afforded the opportunity to meet numerous other collectors and expand his golf collecting interests and knowledge. He relishes learning from and exchanging information with other golf collectors. With few exceptions they gladly share their expertise in unique and specialized areas of collecting.Dick has served as historian for two of America's oldest clubs, Dorset Field Club (1886) and Greenwich Country Club (1892). He is the proud father of six children and resides in coastal Georgia with his lovely wife, Kirsten Peter Georgiady learned to play golf on the public courses of Milwaukee at age ten but it was on Scottish links while a post- graduate student at Dundee University that Pete Georgiady became a golfer of “spirit.” It was there he got his first taste of the enormous history of the royal and ancient game.Pete became acquainted with some of the old generation golf club makers who ultimately influenced his research specialization – the history of golf equipment. As a result he has written a dozen books on the topic of golf clubs and golf club makers, the “forgotten” element in the game's history. Pete has contributed articles to most of the major golf publications over the last twenty years, been active in golf collecting circles, the USGA Museum and is the founder and Championship Director of the National Hickory Championship, a competition contested with 19th century equipment and rules.Smiling, he says he continually gets requests for information on various historical golf aspects especially from club collectors. The most rewarding request earned him a role on the sleuthing television show, History Detectives, when he was called upon as an antiquities expert to evaluate the provenance of an old golf club. In his future is an assignment to teach his granddaughter and grandson to play golf.
