About the Author:
It is Ron Ross' contention that wherever you turn in this world there is a story and he would like to tell as many of them as possible. Growing up in the East Flatbush section of Brooklyn, Ron took a most circuitous path to realize his dream of being a writer/storyteller. He earned his B.A. at Brooklyn College where he majored in English and then studied for his Masters Degree at New York University after a two year hitch in the army. Ron was also involved in the boxing world - first as boxer, then a manager and promoter, all while running a successful real estate business for nearly forty years. However, through all the years in the business and sports world, he nurtured his true passion - writing. It wasn't until he closed his Real Estate office in 1992, though, that he was able to place his writing on the front burner. His collection of short stories titled "TALES FROM THE SIDEWALKS OF NEW YORK" (2012) was preceded by "THE TOMATO CAN" (1993), "BUMMY DAVIS VS. MURDER, INC." (2003), and "NINE...TEN...AND OUT! THE TWO WORLDS OF EMILE GRIFFITH" (2008). Ron also was involved in and played in the feature length documentary "RING OF FIRE; THE EMILE GRIFFITH STORY", based on his book. In 2007, stepping into a new and somewhat unfamiliar arena, Ron Ross wrote two children's books, McGURK AND ME and WILLIE THE QUIET TURTLE. The books were illustrated by youngsters in an art program at the Friedberg JCC in Oceanside. Ron also remains active as a member of the Boxing Writers Association of America and writes numerous boxing articles as well as covering major fights around the country. A native New Yorker, Ron and his wife Susan now share their time between Oceanside, NY and Boca Raton, Florida.
From Publishers Weekly:
The ``sweet science'' of boxing is reduced to a curious alchemy in this uproarious and sentimental look at crooked pugs and their ``wise guy'' handlers. It's 1947, and Jake LaMotta has just thrown the infamous bout at the Garden. Sitting at the usual table in the usual restaurant is crooked boxing maven Sonny, who recounts the evening's events for the usual crowd from the neighborhood. According to these ring rats, LaMotta is a bum who can't even throw a fight gracefully, unlike their former schoolyard friend turned prizefighter, Tommy Curcio. Nicknamed ``The Cockie-Doodie Boy'' after an unfortunate childhood incident, Tommy once made an art form of taking a fall in the ring. In the parlance of the boxing world, this earns one the label, ``Tomato Can,'' as well as the friendship of those who consider a fair fight to be a sucker bet. However, love for Rosie, daughter of Big Nose Sallie, not greed, motivated Tommy's compliance. Dimwitted, but with a heart of gold, he had misgivings about being a skilled loser. However, loyalty to his mob patrons won out, setting the stage for a truly hilarious fight scene.
