SPEAK STANDARD, TOO is an innovative standard English-acquisition program for older students and adults who speak nonstandard English dialects - such as Appalachian English or African American English Vernacular/Black English - or who speak foreign accented English. Its text and 5 CDs are used nationally as a per student set, a teacher-resource and/or as an adult self-help program for learning oral and written standard English as a second dialect. The SPEAK STANDARD, TOO program is appropriate and designed for nonstandard English-speaking students in middle school, high school, college, continuing education, tutoring and outreach programs, juvenile and prisoner-education programs and corporate training classes. SPEAK STANDARD, TOO teaches students to master oral standard English grammar and pronunciation - rule by rule - in a nonjudgmental, linguistically-based, oral curriculum. Subsequently, students learn how to monitor themselves so that they can switch back and forth between their first speaking styles and the new standard dialect, choosing the more appropriate dialect for each particular set of circumstances - similar to a bi-lingual program.

About the Author:
Mary I. Berger was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. For over thirty years she has taught Nonstandard English-speakers to become i-dialectal, so they can master oral Standard English without giving up their own speaking styles, and pursue the academics and professions that are commensurate with their real intelligence, talents and interests. Ms. Berger designed, and - for eighteen years - taught a bi-dialectic Standard English-acquisition course for the diverse student-body of Chicago's Columbia University. The course's nonjudgmental and systematic curriculum has been replicated nationally in educational, corporate and outreach settings and has been the subject of numerous newspaper articles and radio/TV talk shows. In 1991, Ms. Berger founded Orchard Books, Inc. Through the auspices of this company, she has written the curriculum for our seminars, workshops and classes. In addition, Mary authored our books and CDs, which include two sets of nationally distributed programs: SPEAK STANDARD, TOO: Add Standard English as a Second Dialect to Your Talking Style - a per student or self-help text/CD program; and TEACH STANDARD, TOO: Teach Oral and Written Standard English as a Second Dialect to English-Speaking Students - a teacher's manual, which includes the 95 SchoolTalk/FriendTalk scripted lessons, and the accompanying Write Standard, Too student journals. Ms. Berger's five-step methodology, her books and the curriculum for our workshops, seminars and classes grew out of her Northwestern University undergraduate and graduate degrees in Speech-Language Pathology, her extensive linguistic research and the practical knowledge and experience she gained as a public school speech therapist, university instructor and educator/corporate trainer. Mary continues to conduct training workshops for undergraduate and graduate students in University Departments of Education, for school districts, outreach programs and national conferences. Review:
I finally have an answer, and a way to learn to speak and to write standard English. The best part of the approach is how the lessons clearly contrast each nonstandard rule with the corresponding standard English rule - encouraging us to repeat the old way and contrast it with the new way. Now, I can see and hear the difference, and for the first time, it all makes sense to me. I've been making so much progress and have gained so much self-confidence! I only wish that I had known about these materials when I first started out professionally so I would not have been so afraid of saying something wrong. Thank you so much! --Professional parent who wants to model Standard English for her school-aged son

Speak Standard, Too is easy to read, easy to understand, easy to apply, believable, courteous, respectful, energetic, gentle, practical, motivating and user-friendly! I highly recommend it for students who need their speech to become more standard. --------- SST is a thorough and attractive book ... I especially like the arrangement of the materials into pronunciation and grammatical differences. ----------- I had to write you to tell you that Speak Standard, Too is an excellent book which could be invaluable for helping students to master standard English. --------------- I am thrilled that you managed to be so thorough ... I was already pleased with the organization, but seeing SST in my students' hands has made me notice the nice style of the print and how appealing the glossy, colorful cover is. Thanks! --University Professors and Department Chairs/Highschool English Teacher/Speech Language Pathologists

A review of the 150-page Speak Standard, Too text-manual, complete with lesson illustrations and worksheets, suggest that it could be an invaluable way for tutors, school volunteers - and others who work with children - to come to a better understanding of the perfectly valid grammar, syntax and vocabulary of nonstandard forms of English, and how they relate to standard English. SST can help teachers and tutors do what its program does - show appreciation for their students' native speech, while encouraging use of standard English in situations where it would be to the child's advantage. --Excerpt from Partners in Education's Magazine Review
