As someone wrote on an Egyptian tablet about 2,000 B.C., things are not what they used to be. I've written this book as a guide to those numberless people, women and men, who have embarked on this difficult, puzzling, sometimes unnatural, usually surprising, and often almost overwhelming lifestyle called man-woman middle-aged dating, a very different phenomenon from anything you knew in your youth. From my own experiences -- too many, as I'd never dreamed it would be this hard to find a compatible other -- and from my conversations and observations, I've made some discoveries and drawn some conclusions that might be helpful to you.
Unless you're absolutely new to the club, you must have found out it's not the paradise that some marrieds still tell you they think it is. I truly believe some of them really do think so. (Often with envy.) "How come you're having such a hard time finding a mate?" Often enough, thinking themselves pretty sharp in the psychology department, they even question my honesty: I really don't want to be married; I like my freedom, and the excitement of the hunt. (For my response, see the next chapter.) We who're in it know better.
