The sign had been erected in Jerome's heyday by proud members of the city's chamber of commerce; and though the description was ultra-superlative the citizens believed that the message conveyed was obvious and unimpeachable fact. They had reason, for while few cities in American can be designated truly unique, this famed mining community int he Black Hills of Central Arizona is certainly one of those few.
The eat of clinging precariously to the steep and sliding slopes of a barren mountain is in itself sufficient to earn the designation "unique". But the element that really sets Jerome apart is the colorful and exciting saga of the men who burrowed deep in the mountains to create two of the world's great copper mines, the fame of which attracted people to this bonanza camp in an almost continuous stream from more than fifty years. They came from the town's beginning until its decline, men and women of many countries and classes, and they boosted, boomed and built the first lonely camp into a town and the town into a clamoring little city.
The story of the men who discovered, developed and protected the mines of Jerome has been told in Ghosts of Cleopatra Hill (a book that will be released this year). They Came to Jerome will deal specifically with the people of the town itself, those who in fullness of their pride named it "The Billion Dollar Copper Camp" long before the ultimate billion in production had been attained: the people who attempted to direct the town's growth, feed, clothe, and entertain its citizens and time after time willed it to rise from its ashes.
