He knows what he's talking about. Nobody in America can match his experience as news reporter, media consultant, crisis manager, and on-camera coach.
He was a reporter for 30 years. The first 16 years were in newspapers (Florida Times-Union, Jacksonville Journal, Miami Herald), finishing that career as Washington correspondent for the Herald.
He moved to television in 1970, accepting one of TV's most unusual assignments ever for WHAS-TV in Louisville, Kentucky. He worked undercover for eight months, carrying hidden cameras into illegal gambling joints to expose police and political corruption there. His documentaries gained immediate national attention.
In 1972 he returned to Miami as investigative reporter for WPLG-TV. His work there, specializing in law enforcement corruption and organized crime, made him one of the most honored and respected investigative reporters in American journalism. He is the only reporter for a local TV station to ever win three duPont-Columbia Awards (broadcasting's equivalent of the Pulitzer Prize).
His other honors include a Nieman Fellowship at Harvard University and four Emmys. While he was still reporting, he also taught broadcast journalism as an adjunct professor at the University of Miami.
After publishing the first version of Winning with the News Media in 1984, he left news reporting to form his media consulting company. Based in Anna Maria, Florida, he consults with clients all over the country, helping them manage media crises. The bulk of his work involves seminars in media skills and strategy for a wide range of professions, government agencies and companies.
He also works one-on-one with clients, teaching them — on-camera — how to handle the questions of news reporters and industry analysts; how to make winning presentations; conduct news conferences, testify in court, and appear before legislative committees.
