Side by Side integrates yound people and senior adults in a series of activities that draws on "the real world" of the local neighborhood. In the process, young people learn about local history, economic, architecture, politics, current events, sociology, and urban planning. They also develop their analytic, writing, presentation, and map-reading skills. Seiors learn too, while sharing their experiences and developing friendships with the youth in their neighborhood. Side by Side is about community, and about the future. Through its activies, young people and senior adults are encouraged to be better aware, more active, and, ultimately, more responsible citizens and leaders.

About the Author:
Matthew S. Kaplan, Ph.D., is Assistant Professor of Psychology at Hawaii Pacific University. He holds a doctorate in Environmental Psychology from the Graduate School and University Center at the City University of New York. He is the recipeint of a 1994-95 Fulbright Scholarship to conduct research on the emergence of the intergenerational movement in Japan.
