Can scientifically-minded people understand Jesus in a way that does not require them to sacrifice their intellect for their religion? Using modern historical scholarship, the results of archaeology, and tools provided by other scholarly disciplines, Marvin Cain combines the skills of a university religion professor and an electrical engineer to set forth a straightforward and objective portrait of Jesus as a first-century man. Initially conceived for an audience of scientists and engineers, Jesus the Man will appeal to those at home in the modern world.

"As noted earlier, people have understood the nature miracles in three different ways. The first has been to accept them all as factual accounts: they are in the Bible so they must be true. This is how many Christians deal with the nature miracles even today. A second way is to seek a rational explanation for what ancient people considered a miracle. This approach, which was born in the Enlightenment, is the most popular one with many modern scientifically trained people. The third way is to seek to learn the significance of the miracle and the purpose of the miracle account. We still need to keep in mind the way nature operates now, and as it has always operated for the past fifteen billion years. Basic to this approach is an examination of the antecedents of the nature miracles in the history and traditions of Israel and an awareness of how those traditions informed and motivated the gospel writers."
