Josef is dying, and while dying, he seems to radiate a strange black light which attracts family, friends, and neighbors. Ulla Berkewicz writes a text which could also be read like commentaries and indications of a film director for a silent movie. It is by a series of body movements and gestures, and a few utterances, that we witness the workings of death around and in the body of an old man alive to the last second of his life.

Chest trouble, says the mother, it's pretty bad. She says there's something growing in the old man's chest.

When she calls me, I must go and stay.

He doesn't have much longer to live, the doctor told her. The growth is spreading, pressing against his heart. Even though his heart is weakened, it's managing to function, somehow. I give him not months, but weeks, or just days.

He gets scared at night and creeps into my bed, says the mother. Her words frighten me. What's the old man afraid of?
