About the Author:
Bob Peterson has been a teacher union activist for the past two decades. He has been a building rep, a member of the Executive Board of the Milwaukee Teachers Education Association, and a delegate to the NEA national assembly. A fifth grade teacher, he was winner of Wisconsin's Elementary Teacher of the Year Award in 1995. He is a founding editor of the quarterly journal, Rethinking Schools. Michael Charney has been a member of the Executive Board of the Cleveland Teacher Union for over a decade as the middle school representative. He edits the Critique, the newspaper of the CTU, and Ohio Teacher, the publication of the Ohio Federation of Teachers. In 1996, he was awarded the AFT's Robert Porter Award.
