As the legal process becomes more complex and specialized – and as the need to generate firm income creates greater pressure to bill hours, settle cases, and do deals – the training of tomorrow’s trial lawyers is fading in importance. In response, veteran California trial lawyer Martin Grayson has written The View From the First Chair, a detailed and insightful work into the litigation process, and the legal and psychological art of the lawsuit.

Review:
Grayson's book is informative, often clever. It's a roadmap for young litigators that also contains valuable insights for seasoned practitioners. --Mac, a Texas litigator

I'm pleased to endorse this book; its wisdom and "war stories" offer the young lawyer a peek into the secrets of the litigation process. And as someone with 29 years of trial experience, I found myself nodding in agreement at the author's insight, support, and practice tips for every attorney facing their first major litigation challenge. The View From the First Chair covers depositions, how to find expert witnesses, how to handle that first court appearance, how to mediate and settle cases, and how to play to a jury trial. A must-read for every beginning litigator. --JoAnne, a Maryland litigator

"Grayson, a veteran California defense lawyer, writes about all aspects of the litigation process in an accessible way. His collection of essays - practical and humorous - present an accurate, big-picture perspective with specific tips for lawyers and law students. Collectively, his essays offer fresh insight into the litigation process and the art of the lawsuit." --National Association for Law Placement

"Grayson's new book reads like a novel, and imparts critical information to novice and experienced practitioners alike." - William T. Dzurilla, partner/Boies, Schiller & Flexner --William, a partner at Boies, Schiller & Flexner

"This book is a gem of a practice guide, and could easily serve as a roadmap for any lawyer wanting to be a successful trial lawyer. It is filled with great advice, and stocked with insights into the mind of the accomplished, successful trial lawyer. If a young lawyer takes its lessons to heart, he or she will be light-years ahead of a similarly experienced opponent." --James Heiting, past president, California Bar Association

"A succinct beginner's guide authored by an experienced defense lawyer, and recommended for new associates and law students. With its conversational tone, the book functions as a virtual mentor, giving readers a sense of what is required of trial preparation, especially the psychology of being a trial lawyer. The focus isn't on caselaw but rather on practice tips and real world examples. Overall, a good read for a new associate or student who wish to know the realities of being the first or second chair in trial." --The American Association of Law Libraries
