When writers and photographers combine efforts to document "interesting" fives, fascinating collections can result. Ordinary lives often become extraordinary in combinations of portraiture and autobiography, while famous lives rarely fail to satisfy our curiosity. Body & Soul: Ten American Women presents "monologues" crafted by Coman from interviews and collaborative editing with subjects. Dater's black-and-white photographs illustrate each life through two dozen or so images in a variety of formats: full or partial-page images, cut-outs, montages. The mixture of posed and candid shots accompanying each woman's text truly brings these words alive as subjects are caught midmotion or against startlingly symbolic pieces of their lives. Doreen Lopes, a middle-aged mother who overcame dyslexia and illiteracy, leans against a graffiti-scrawled wall as though in relief of the confused scribbling suggestive of her former life. Maggie Ross, a nun-hermit sponsored by both Roman and Anglican churches, twirls into a ghostly white form through a trick of Dater's camera and the dim lighting of a sanctuary. -- From Independent Publisher
