Listening in the Real Word: Clues to English Conversation has been designed to bridge the gap between the formally enunciated language of the ESL classroom and the informal language that the student is likely to encounter beyond the classroom setting. By concentrating on a series of commonly spoken reductions, the text attempts to make English comprehensible to the ESL student who may have formulated an inaccurate set of expediencies about the way English should sound. The thirty-six lessons of the book are intended to help the student decipher the real world English of reduced forms (assimilations, co-articulations, and glides). The text gives the English language learner practice in listening to and repeating sentences as they are likely to be spoken by a native American speaker of English. The lessons are arranged in a cumulative fashion so that reductions presented in earlier lessons are incorporated in later lessons. The text has not included all the reduced variations of English that the student might encounter in the language. The emphasis has been placed on commonly spoken reductions. To aid the student who may not be familiar with formal phonetic systems, all reduced forms have been written in the Roman alphabet. Listening in the Real World is divided into three parts: 1) a set of thirty-six ordered reduction presentations, 2) a set of two hundred situational dialogs, and 3) a set of two hundred activation exercises based on the dialogs. The text may be used in several ways. For more advanced students, the teacher may want to begin with Part Two, the dialogs, and work on the reduction patterns in Part One as the need arises. For intermediate students, it is suggested that the teacher begin with Part One, the presentation lessons, and have the students repeat the set of reductions contained in each lesson. A complete script and answer key is provided at the back of the text.
