Forest Certification Auditing provides an overview of universal auditing principles applied to the unique characteristics of forests and their management, independent of any particular forest certification scheme. As such, it is meant to supplement other courses and materials aimed at general environmental management system auditing, surveys of forest certification schemes, and auditor training for forest certification schemes (all of which also are important for forest auditors and, to some extent, for firms seeking to be audited). By filling this special niche, this book is intended to bridge the gaps among forest certification schemes, raise the quality of all forest certification auditing, and provide a basis for improving forest certification standards. It is not intended, however, to take the place of forest certification auditing training required for any auditor certification or other formal auditor qualification.

Chapter 1 concerns forest certification auditing in general and covers the theoretical and historical origins of the "green" certification of forests. Chapter 2 describes the characteristics of major North American forest certification schemes—Canadian Standards Association, Forest Stewardship Council, Green Tag, International Organization of Standardization, Sustainable Forestry Initiative�, and Tree Farm System. Chapter 3 covers auditing principles, roles, and procedures applied in the context of forests and forest management. Chapter 4 presents 15 case studies to demonstrate the application of the material in Chapter 3. Chapter 5 provides an overview of other information resources on forest certification, including how to get started as an auditor.
