Italian Poetry 1950—1990 by Gayle Ridinger and Gian Paolo Renello, Paperback ISBN 9780937832349 $18.95; E-Book ISBN 978032202 This bilingual anthology encompasses work by three generations of poets. It is intended to introduce readers and students to both experimental and more traditional currents of Italian poetry during the second half of the last century. The first generation (poets born before 1935) includes such names as Nobel Prize winner Eugenio Montale and Pier Paolo Pasolini, together with avant-garde poets like Andrea Zanzotto and Edoardo Sanguineti. The poetry of the second generation (born between 1935 and 1945) reveals a clear need to come to terms with the radical experimentation of the past; included are the late Antonio Porta and Nanni Cagnone. The section dedicated to the youngest generation (those born after 1945) features poets ranging from Valerio Magrelli to the leader of the neo-neo-avant-garde, Lello Voce. It also includes selections of prose poetry representative of the recent exploration of directions pioneered by Dino Campana. The strong work of six female poets, two per generation, will hopefully right the impression that contemporary Italian poetry is predominantly a male concern. The anthology also provides readers with a general introduction and a bio-bibliographical note on each poet. "Ridinger's translations are attentive to individual poetic voices. In all, this is a major step toward bringing these important and inventive voices to American readers in a single volume. Recommended for public and academic literary collections." LIBRARY JOURNAL, April 1, 1996. GAYLE RIDINGER: Gayle was born in New Jersey and grew up in the Chicago area. She graduated in 1979 with a B.A. in English from Oberlin College. Since 1981, she has lived in Italy, working as an English teacher and translator. She has taught translation techniques since 1987 at the Istituto Universtario di Lingue Moderne, a private university in Milan. Her translations of contemporary Italian poetry have appeared in Verse, Modern Poetry in Translation, and in numerous bilingual literary reviews published in Italy. She is married and lives in Milan with her husband and two children. GIAN PAOLO RENELLO: Gian Paolo was born in Monterotondo, near Rome, Italy. He received his Diploma di Maturità Classica, Laurea Cum Laude in Italian literature at the University of Pavia. Presently, he is completing his Doctorate in Belgium. He is the co-editor of Baldus, a literary magazine covering modern Italian culture. He is also coordinating an on-line project with the goal of placing Italian literature references on the Internet. He currently lives in Rome.
