Country music legends didn't materialize, fully formed, entertaining rows of cheering fans. Like other overnight successes, their "nights" often lasted for years. During those years, before the spotlight illuminated their path, they often stumbled over shadowy obstacles and ran headlong into endless rows of closed doors.

The eventual scars from those painful encounters formed a protective shield against the injuries yet to come. The music they performed also seemed to strengthen their resistance.
