Judged by today's standards, the tales are long; they have a quaint, old-fashioned, leisurely tone. Heavily descriptive, at times they are overwritten, even derivative. However, the stories teem with vivid detail and beg to be read and shared aloud. That the reindeer's shoe has diamond nailsand that one nail is missing seems just right. A strong narrative line and, above all, inner logic, help the stories work. The cut-paper silhouettes in black and gray that illustrate this volume, made over 50 years ago, add a sense of mystery to the volume. A collection well worth considering for purchase. Ellen D.
