This volume describes the past in South Dakota from prehistory to the outset of the twenty-first century. Some chapters provide new interpretations for topics already evaluated in the historical literature while others present themes not previously addressed in any publications. Sixteen authors include men and women who have earned the greatest recognition for their cultural and historical studies of the northern Great Plains. Accordingly, at the time of publication, the aggregate of their contributions must be regarded as a definitive study.
