Dixon Donnelly is a Minneapolis business lawyer with a struggling practice and an unfulfilling love life. He finds himself drawn into a bizarre shooting incident in a small town in northern Minnesota. His client, Duke MacKenzie, is being sued for shooting a burglar in Duke's house. The bigger problem is that Duke was so distraught that he took his own life before telling his story to anyone. While Dixon originally believes he is handling a simple insurance dispute regarding the injury suffered by the burglar, the evidence soon points to something far more nefarious. Dixon then finds himself drawn into the unfamiliar world of criminal law and small-town America. Along the way, he learns important lessons about himself and about truth, love, and justice.

From the Publisher:
ÒLiarÕs DiceÓ is the first novel by Minneapolis attorney Bob Gust. GustÕs hero, Dixon Donnelly, is a funny and disputatious but mannerly young lawyer who left a large Minneapolis firm to strike out on his own because he didnÕt want a jerk for a boss. Dixon has a struggling practice, specializing in business law, and a girlfriend who specializes in talking during movies.

Relief comes in the form of a referral to defend the estate of Duke MacKenzie in Hibbing. MacKenzie shot an intruder, the abusive husband of the woman who was a that moment in his bedroom, and then ran off into the woods, where he apparently turned the gun on himself. Now the wounded husband is suing the estate. DixonÕs search for the truth behind the bizarre events takes him to Hibbing, where he learns that some of the locals may be a lot more clever than they are letting on.

Some of the novelÕs plotting and explanations are a little weak, but Gust writes easily, and his courtroom scenes are a riveting, skillful display of the art of interrogation. --Star Tribune, Sept. 2005
