It all started with my meeting Perky Brandt, the pastor's wife, on the night of their Mother and Daughter Banquet at her church. It was only minutes after Perky and I were introduced and seated at the head table before we began to compare childhoods and the church women stereotypes we both knew. We found that we had so much in common as we traded stories about our church-related childhoods. It was amazing and amusing. In general, you could say we giggled our way through that whole dinner. Not once did we act dignified - like a pastor's wife or a banquet speaker should have. We were more comparable to two junior high school girls, acting silly and speaking a foreign language only we could understand.

Several months after our meeting, we were having a phone conversation when my new friend Perky grew serious. As a minister's wife, she was expressing some growing concerns about the women in their congregation. She talked not only of women's physical looks, but of their attitudes and needs as well.

"The women come in all shapes, sizes, and ages, and from different backgrounds, but somehow they all look alike." Perky commented and then added, "I think it has something to do with inner beauty (or their lack thereof), but whatever is going on inside seems to affect their outer looks too."

Perky's voice took on a mischievous tone, so I was alerted to the fact that she was about to make a "we" statement that would draft me into an "I" response. Sure enough.

"Do you suppose, as Christian women, we (there is was) need some kind of a charm course or self-improvement workshop?"

My immediate reaction was a quick no. I reasoned that Christian women didn't need any course, books, or lessons on beauty. After all, when a woman truly accepts Christ, the Creator of all beauty, as her Savior, isn't she as radiant as a bride? Isn't she beautiful, just knowing she is loved and allowing the Lord Himself to shine through her? Of course she is!"

But my next thought was, "Or is she?"

All those speaking and singing engagements of mine provided the perfect opportunity for taking a good look at Christian women. But before I go on, I must make one thing clear. I deplore - especially in our American culture - the continual, incessant worship of beauty and youth. All you need is one flaw, one physical or one emotional defect, and you cannot qualify for the beautiful-people set. Unfortunately, "rich and thin is in!"

There is not a line in this writing intended to give support to an already over-worshiped beauty cult. Rather, I pray that this book will help us all to take a good look at the women in our own mirrors. Then, perhaps we can sanely evaluate all our vital statistics in their proper relationship to our lives and discover ways to minimize our flaws and maximize our strengths.

When I began to take a purely academic look at my audiences, at the women in my own church, and yes, especially at myself. I did see a need.

Later in this book I want to develop some of the hows and whys of inner beauty, but first, let me tell you what I saw on the outside of Christian women.
