With the appearance of this English translation, Western readers will for the first time be able to appreciate the poetry of Korea’s most revered and popular modern poet. Born at the beginning of the twentieth century, Kim Sowol was the first poet to introduce the Korean vernacular into poetry. His verse combines sharply edged, everyday phrasing with a lyrical lightness of expression that is unique among modern poets.

About the Author:

Kim Sowol (1902-1934) is most famous for his contributions to early modern Korean poetry. He wrote most of the poems contained in The Azaleas, his first and only poetic collection published during his lifetime, while still a teenager in 1925. Throughout his short life he wrote beautifully poignant poetry in a style reminiscent of traditional Korean folk songs.
