From the Inside Flap:
An increase in performance requires more comprehensive and better quality training. The coach's task is to achieve the greatest possible increase in performance, making the best use of the players' strengths and time. Any part of training that does not lead to a real increase in performance must be excluded.

Technique, tactics, conditioning, and the interdependence of these must all be stressed. The responsibility of stressing these aspects in training sessions during the competitive training season rests upon coaches; very stringent demands will be placed on the coaches' organizational abilities, physiological knowledge, pedagogical and psychological skills, and perception of movement. Modern training must be intensive and with relatively few breaks. This will be achieved only through an organized and well thought out training program.

Modern training demands hard work. The training attitude of the players to a great extent depends on the pedagogical and psychological skills of the coach. He or she must inspire the players' enthusiasm and encourage their will power and fighting spirit.

Personal playing and competitive experiences will help the coach in his or her perception of movements, which is necessary for effective completion of the training drills and exercises presented in this second of two soccer training volumes. Modern soccer needs new, rational techniques. Many out-dated techniques must be eliminated, while others must be refined and improved. The coach's personal experiences must be brought up to date.

The constant improvement of sport education should be encouraged, since the modern game makes great demands on theoretical as well as practical knowledge. The more effective training methods are, the more worthwhile the drills and exercises become. The coach, who is responsible for the physical preparation and skill development of players, becomes a leader who contributes to every aspect of the players' physical and psychological development. To vary practice, a large number of drills and exercises--over 100 in total--are presented in this book. They are suitable for coaches working with players at the top class level, as well as with young ambitious soccer players.

Drills and Exercises for Group and Individual Training

The drills and exercises presented in this book--135 in total--are specially designed for caoches and for players of intermediate to higher levels of proficiency. The drills are designed for group and individual practicing of soccer-specific skills. The drills are divided into the following four major categories:

1. Drills for goalkeepers (1-29)
2. Drills for fullbacks and halfbacks (30-71)
3. Drills for halfbacks and inside forwards (72-90)
4. Drills for inside forwards and wing forwards (90-135)

Ex. 1

Players: 1 GK; 4 FP

Equipment: 6 balls

Description:

The CO stands with the balls approximately 20 metres from the goal. The forwards stand left and right of him at a distance of about 15 feet. The CO quickly plays the ball alternately to the forwards on the right and left. The forwards shoot the passed ball directly at the goal from inside the penalty area.

Objectives:

1. Correct positional play; decreasing the shooting angle
2. Correct catching, diving, and throwing in rapid sequence
3. Concentration training

Comments:

A series of balls shot quickly one after the other forces the GK to concentrate on each shot without pausing. This teaches special dexterity.
