Grade 4-8-- Ingram's book seems to be the first treatment of this subject since Cole's Twins, the Story of Multiple Births (Morrow, 1972; o.p.). The colorful cartoon-like cover is sure to attract readers. Famous twins, including mythological couples, are discussed as an introduction. Ingram then gives readers the scientific facts on identical versus fraternal twins with the genetic implications. Strange facts about animal multiple births include current experiments such as those to save the whooping cranes. A discussion of "super-twins" (more than two at a time) leads to speculations on cloning and the multiples in Huxley's Brave New World. Ingram presents the facts and the possible role of coincidence in some of the famous cases studied. The chapter covering beliefs about multiple births around the world is of special interest to students of cultural differences as well. Ingram closes with notes on the almost telepathic bond that seems to exist between some twins. The writing is in simple declarative style, but the print is small.
