The author moves into the 1940s and 1950s to describe the rise of Donald Stewart, son of Rose Brent and Alexandre Sellier, to the rank of cabinet minister in the federal government. He marries to advance his political career, leaving his childhood friend, Rose-Delima, who has always loved him, on the periphery of his life. Rose-Delima's brother, Germain, a northern Ontario businessman, is initiated into the secret Order of Jacques Cartier, open only to French Catholics. Donald, as Minister of External Relations, travels to Africa, and at his mother's request, looks for Father Alexandre Sellier who has devoted his life to his African mission, unaware that he has a son. To write the moving conclusion of the trilogy, Brodeur travelled to the northern region of the Ivory Coast.
