Fascinating history of the construction and operation of the Utah & Northern narrow gauge railway and its successors. The U&N was the first railroad to breach the remote mining frontiers of Idaho and western Montana. Conceived by the Mormon Church as a way to connect the Union Pacific at Ogden with the mining camps some 400 miles away in Montana, the railroad was ultimately finished by the Union Pacific. The book also describes the operations of its successor, the standard gauge Oregon Short Line & Utah Northern, which was eventually integrated into the UP. The book also covers the standard gauge Gilmore & Pittsburgh, a little mountain railroad that ran for a few decades across the Bitterroot Mountains from Armstead, MT to Salmon, Idaho in the Lemhi Valley. Illustrated throughout with rare vintage black and white photos. With maps, timetables, and ephemera. 216 pages.
