About the Author:
Norris Lacy is the Edwin Erle Sparks Professor of medieval literature at Penn State University. His major interests include medieval narrative (especially romance and fabliau), though he has also worked extensively on Villon's poetry and a variety of other subjects. Primarily, however, he specializes in the Arthurian legend, across periods from the beginnings to the present and across languages and disciplines, from literature to painting, film, and popular culture. His first single-authored book was The Craft of Chretien de Troyes, and He co-authored The Arthurian Handbook with Geoffrey Ashe. In addition to preparing several critical editions of medieval and later texts, he served as editor of The New Arthurian Encyclopedia, of the first full translation of the Lancelot-Grail (i.e., Vulgate Cycle) and the Post-Vulgate, and of a number of other volumes. Among the recent collections he has edited are A History of Arthurian Scholarship, followed by A Companion to Chretien de Troyes (co-edited with Joan Grimbert) and The Grail, the Quest and the World of Arthur. In his research on Arthuriana, he began by examining the architectonics of romances, and his focus gradually shifted to a consideration of the narrator's voice and, more recently, to the function of the numerous and nearly systematic discontinuities and inconsistencies that make Arthurian subjects the endlessly fascinating creations they are. The appeal of shorter narrative (fabliaux in particular) led him to publish Reading Fabliaux (Summa Publications) and a number of related articles and to co-edit The Old French Fabliaux: Essays on Comedy and Context. His interest in these works extends from a close examination of the language and composition of texts to a study of their cultural and historical context. Gloria Torrini-Roblin is senior lecturer in French studies at the Ohio State University, Columbus.
