"Although the ambiance of the book is definitely produced by Spain, where the book was originally published, the childlike quality of the story is universal. The beginning line, 'The day that Turco - a little pistol of a pup - ate Señor Sala's hat, Señor Sala decided that enough was enough and that it would take the patience of a saint to put up with this mischief any longer,' sets the frolicsome tone that is carried throughout the book. After Turco is expelled, Little Sala hunts for a companion to fill the empty place in his life. And after trying to imagine his aunt's canary, the floor lamp, and a canvas ball as substitutes, he finally comes upon a 'very big brush (that)...had been banished forever from the family broom closet.' Brush proves to be the ideal pet: it moves like a dog, snuggles up to get warm, turns somersaults, and displays its stomach to be scratched. Although at first the Salas are dubious, Brush eventually endears itself to the entire household by foiling a burglar. The simple compositions, flat colors, and slightly bizarre qualities of the art are reminiscent of the best of the early Tomi Ungerer books...the story line is absurd fantasy at its best." --- The Horn Book Magazine
