Synopsis

In a cave in the canyon, a bobcat drowses while her three kittens wrestle playfully. High above them, a big-eared bat and her tiny batling hang by their toes from the cavern's rocky ceiling. To see a wild baby is a miracle indeed, because wild mothers hide their babies well. It is a very rare and special occasion when a human sees a newborn wildling such as a bear cub or a bobcat kitten in the wild with its mother. I have learned to sit quietly and wait and sketch, and I have seen many small miracles. Bats swooping and drinking from a silent pool. An owl diving to answer a mousey squeak. A pine marten trotting along sniffing at every drift of leaves or tangle of branches along its way. I've watched red-tailed hawks mating in the bright spring sky and a tiny fawn suckling eagerly, its fuzzy tail whipping and flipping.

My house is in the forest that appears in this book, and bears and bobcats visit often. I have glanced up from my illustrating to see a bear peering at me intently through the window and bobcats striding gracefully by.

These are the great wonders of our world, and for those who have no chance to live with them and see them on a daily basis, I offer the gift of this book.
