About the Author:
Minnie Rose Lovgreen was born in 1888 down the fen in Norfolk County, England. She was the eighth of nineteen children. All of them helped work the 200 acres her father farmed. At age eleven, Minnie Rose hired herself out as a mother's helper to an elderly couple in Ely, Cambridgeshire. From then on she supported herself. In 1922, she and her brother decided they could go ahead better in Canada. They booked passage on the Titanic, but arrived at the Southampton dock to find the sailing time delayed. Being impatient, they boarded another ship instead and arrived safely in Montreal. In 1920 she moved to Bainbridge Island, Washington, from Vancouver, B.C., and found a position as children s nursemaid. There she married Danish-born Leo Lovgreen, who worked in a local dairy. They saved and worked together to build their own dairy, beginning with six cows on a rented nine-acre farm. The Lovgreens' Bainbridge Dairy prospered for 30 years and grew to 75 cows on 120 acres. Leo and Minnie and their two sons delivered milk all over Bainbridge Island for ten cents a quart with half a pint of cream on top. .
Review:
I love this book--written in such a natural, endearing voice--makes me want to climb into a hammock in the middle of a green field, breathe in a farm and listen to the chickens cluck. ANNA QUINN, THE WRITERS' WORKSHOPPE, PORT TOWNSEND, WA --NW Trillium Press It is one of those remarkable lucky strokes of fate that Minnie arranged to sail on the Titanic, but when the ship wasn't ready, came across on another boat. In any case, this charming little book, a veritable bible on how to raise chickens, is being pushed into a local best-seller by Minnie Rose's neighbors and friends. EMMETT WATSON, SEATTLE PI, APRIL, 1975 --NW Trillium Press A priceless present to chicken lovers everywhere....a hand-lettered, illustrated, 30-page booklet that I checked out of my public library close to 30 years ago. Once I'd read it, I knew I needed my own copy, but the book had gone out of print, so I borrowed my favorite portions of it writing down parts of her recipe and following it over the years. Last summer, I received a press release about its 3rd release, (with the book) autographed by Nancy, and knew it was cause for celebration! With ageless mother wit and pluck, a voice from a lost world that is VERY relevant to modern-day chicken lovers. MARYJANESFARM MAGAZINE, DEC.-JAN., 2010 --NW Trillium Press If you are just getting started with chickens, this charming book has the fresh, natural voice of a wise old neighbor sharing a lifetime of experience and skill. As Minnie Rose Lovgreen explains, chickens are the gardner's best friends, eagerly eating weeds, seeds, and bugs. They fluff up soil beautifully, enriching it with their homemade fertilizer as they make it ready to plant. This book will be a splendid guide for beginners and an absolute delight for chicken lovers everywhere. ANN LOVEJOY, AUTHOR, EDUCATOR, CHICKEN LOVER The perfect book for difficult times. Mother wit has come around again to reclaim its rightful place among the perennial virtues. Minnie Rose Lovgreen's chicken knowledge is a kind of poetry of the earth and it yields fresh eggs. A wonderfully put-together little book, as it should be. MIKE DILLON, POET AND PUBLISHER, PACIFIC PUBLISHING CO., SEATTLE, APRIL, 2009 --NW Trillium Press --NW Trillium Press
