At the heart of Caroline Alexander's literary memoir is the assertion of personal identity amid historical tragedy. Mysterious encounters in a Paris bookstore in 1964 alternate with mundane but far more serious encounters in 1989 in the West German city of Monchengladbach. The effect is like being on a child's swing, on which we move rapidly between two worlds. Scene 1: the musty store of a strange Paris bookseller who dabbles in astrology. He attempts to discern the young woman's fate in his charts of the heavens, casting a dark pall over her present state of happiness. Scene 2: a quarter century later she finds herself in the German city of her birth, which has invited her and other survivors for a reunion. Both locales evoke powerful and poignant memories, real and reconstructed, of the child she once was.
About the Author:
Caroline Alexander, journalist and drama critic, was born in the Rhineland where Jewish communities had existed for more than a thousand years. The infamous Nazi chapter in Germany's history compelled many to flee: three-year-old Ingeborg-Karoline was smuggled out at the last moment and so escaped the fate of millions of others. For more than thirty years she has lived in Paris. Married with two children, she writes articles, plays and novels among her cats in a large house full of flowers.
