Book Description Printed wrappers, 8vo, 26 cm, vii, 70 pp, facs. From the preface "Swift's writings are so filled with allusions and references to earlier and contemporary authors that the range of his knowledge of books often surprises the reader. In the sale of his library, a few months after his death, books which he had annotated were specially identified to enhance their value, and since Sir Walter Scott set the example they have been eagerly looked for. More than fifty years ago knowledge of the content of Swift's library became generally available when in 1927 my father, Thomas Philip LeFanu, printed the text of the Catalogue which Swift himself had compiled in 1715, and five years later Sir Harold Williams published an edition of the sale catalogue of 1745/6. The entries in both these catalogues, however, are abbreviated and ill arranged. . I have. Restricted myself to reconstructing the catalogue of the books which Swift listed summarily in 1715." Contents include: Preface; Introduction; The alphabetic catalogue; Catalogues of Swift's library; Other references; Preliminary note; The catalogue; Appendix A: Donors of books to Swift before 1715; B: Books noted by Swift as given, lost, or stolen; c: Present location of Swift's copies from the 1715 catalogue; Facsimile of Swift's autograph manuscript.
