In this intriguing piece of film history, Slide gathers articles from movie fan magazines published during the 1920s and 1930s. The articles were written by major literary figures like Archibald MacLeish, W. Somerset Maugham, Katherine Anne Porter, and Mary Roberts Rinehart. During that period the popularity and financial resources of the fan magazines were at their height. A great deal of the book's charm comes from the unexpected correlation between the author and his topic. For example, e.e. cummings shows a weakness for Mickey Mouse cartoons, and Theodore Dreiser describes the early version of the casting couch. Each article begins with an introduction to the author and explains his or her connection to the film industry. The magazine pieces can be valued more as historical and literary documents than for any insights they provide. As representations of their time and the unique era of the fan mazazine, they have value and interest. For academic libraries and subject collections.
