Though recognized as one of Germany’s best young athletes, Margaret (Gretel)Bergmann Lambert was excluded from organized sports and the university system by the Nazi regime because she was Jewish. In the fall of 1933,the promising track star moved to England, where she enrolled in the London Polytechnic and soon won the British high-jumping Championship. But the German government, under international pressure to allow German-Jewish athletes to participate in the upcoming Berlin Olympics, forced her to return home. Despite having been ranked among the four best high jumpers in the world, Lambert would have her Olympic hopes destroyed once the pressure on Germany dissolved and the Nazi regime barred her from competing. She immigrated to the United States in 1937.
