Grade 7-10?Bredeson surveys the lives of Willa Cather, Katherine Anne Porter, F. Scott Fitzgerald, William Faulkner, Ernest Hemingway, John Steinbeck, Eudora Welty, James Baldwin, Maya Angelou, and Toni Morrison. Several common threads link these writers' novels: the ability to create visual imagery; bringing the 20th century American scene to life; exposing social issues; and strong protagonists. Many of these authors have been recipients of the Pulitzer and/or Nobel prizes. Partial analysis of their major works is woven into the commentary. While the biographical sketches are somewhat superficial, this book does give a good introduction to these major literary figures. More in-depth analysis can be found in references such as American Writers (Scribners, 1981) or the many individual biographies available.
