Gr 4-6-A biography of one of the best-known contemporary Native American artists. Born on a Navajo reservation in 1931, Gorman became interested in art at an early age. This somewhat choppy account follows him through his school years and the early influences on his work. Although always drawing or sculpting, the artist bounced around in many jobs as a young man, working as a handyman, busboy, a sailor in the Navy, and in the Indian Village at Disneyland. In between, he took classes at several universities and art schools, but never graduated. Eventually, Gorman had a one-man show in Taos, NM, and opened his own gallery there. Although this easy-to-read biography hits the main points of his life, it does little more than that.
